Toronto Maple Leafs Could Lose Alex Steeves Without Sufficient NHL Playtime Next Season

The Toronto Maple Leafs may find themselves in a precarious position with forward Alex Steeves as the 2024-25 NHL season approaches. Steeves, a key player for the Toronto Marlies, the team’s AHL affiliate, was recently re-signed to a one-year, two-way contract. Despite this commitment, a little-known contract clause might cause the Maple Leafs to lose the promising player if certain conditions aren’t met.

Under the NHL’s rules for Group 6 unrestricted free agents (UFA), Steeves, who is currently 24 years old, could become a UFA if he does not appear in a sufficient number of NHL games next season. Specifically, players 25 years or older who have played at least three professional seasons but have participated in fewer than 80 NHL games are eligible to become Group 6 UFAs. With only seven NHL games under his belt, Steeves will need to play in at least 73 games in the upcoming season to remain under the Leafs’ control.

Steeves has shown significant potential during his time in the AHL, recording 69 goals and 85 points over 188 games. However, his lack of NHL experience leaves the Leafs at risk of losing him to free agency if he doesn’t see more ice time next season. The Maple Leafs, now under the guidance of Stanley Cup-winning coach Craig Berube, must carefully consider Steeves’ role in the lineup to avoid this outcome.

Given the situation, the decision on how to integrate Steeves into the Maple Leafs’ roster could be crucial. If Berube opts not to give Steeves ample playing time, the Leafs could see him sign with another NHL team, potentially missing out on a player who could contribute significantly in the future.

The hope among Leafs fans and management alike is that Steeves will be given the chance to prove his worth early in the season, securing his place on the team and ensuring that Toronto retains his rights beyond the upcoming season.
