It’s been a quarter-century since the Toronto Maple Leafs last claimed their division title, excluding their temporary win during the 2020-2021 pandemic season. This long-standing dry spell is a stark reminder of the team’s ongoing struggles, marked by the NHL’s longest current Stanley Cup drought. Despite the Maple Leafs’ star-studded roster led by Auston Matthews, the team has faced seven first-round playoff exits and a lone series victory in recent years. Adding to this frustration are six consecutive Game 7 losses, all on the road and five during the Matthews era.
However, the Leafs are entering the upcoming season with renewed hope, as they bring back their core group of players along with several key changes in goal, defense, and coaching. These adjustments could finally pave the way for the Leafs to win the Atlantic Division and secure a more favorable path to playoff success.
The last time the Leafs won their division in 1999-2000, led by Pat Quinn, Mats Sundin, and Curtis Joseph, they managed to exceed expectations. That team, while impressive, lacked the depth of today’s lineup. In contrast, the current roster is packed with talent and potential, placing them firmly within the NHL’s top ten contenders for the Stanley Cup, despite not being universally regarded as top-five favorites.
This season, the Leafs are starting from a much stronger position. Newly named captain Auston Matthews is among the top players in the league, with star forwards William Nylander and Mitch Marner backing him up. John Tavares, though demoted from his captaincy, is poised to prove his value, while a standout season from Marner could set him up for a lucrative contract when he enters free agency next summer.
In addition to their offensive firepower, the Maple Leafs have made significant strides in fortifying their defense. Young, promising talents are set to rise, and the team has bolstered its goaltending depth. Moreover, a new head coach brings fresh strategies and leadership, further fueling optimism. All these factors combined give the Maple Leafs a strong chance to finish atop the Atlantic Division, potentially setting the stage for a deep playoff run.
