Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing Eberechi Eze before the transfer deadline may have come to an end. According to the well-known football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the release clause in Eze’s contract with Crystal Palace has now expired. This development significantly complicates any potential transfer for the attacking midfielder.
Throughout the summer, Eze has been heavily linked with a move away from Selhurst Park, with Tottenham among the clubs reportedly interested in securing his services. In recent weeks, Manchester City has also expressed interest, with sources suggesting that Pep Guardiola is a big admirer of the 25-year-old midfielder. Despite the interest from these top clubs, Crystal Palace has been confident in their ability to retain the England international, largely due to his hefty release clause.
Reports indicated that Eze’s release clause was set at an initial £60 million, with an additional £8 million in potential add-ons. However, with the clause now expired, any club looking to sign Eze will need to engage directly with Crystal Palace to negotiate a transfer fee. Given Palace’s reluctance to sell, especially after losing Michael Olise in the same transfer window, it seems increasingly likely that Eze will remain at the club for the 2024/25 season.
While the expiration of the release clause may seem like a significant blow to Tottenham’s chances, it’s worth noting that no club appeared ready to meet the initial demands anyway. The situation suggests that Eze is set to continue his career at Selhurst Park, at least for the upcoming season, as Palace seems determined to keep their star player.
