Nick Robertson of the Toronto Maple Leafs, currently an RFA and seeking a trade, could be headed to the Montreal Canadiens according to a new trade proposal from the site PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool.
In this hypothetical trade:
**Canadiens receive:**
– Nick Robertson
**Maple Leafs receive:**
– A 2025 second-round pick
– A 2025 third-round pick
On paper, this trade appears logical. Robertson, a former second-round pick, has shown promise in the NHL when given the opportunity. With Montreal holding multiple high draft picks in 2025, trading a couple of them wouldn’t be a significant loss. Robertson could slot into the Canadiens’ second-line left winger role alongside Alex Newhook and Christian Dvorak. At 22, he fits well with Montreal’s young roster and could assume a larger role than he has in Toronto.
Last season, Robertson tallied 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points in 56 games. Across 87 NHL games, he has 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points. The Maple Leafs would gain valuable draft picks that GM Brad Treliving could use to enhance the team later.
Despite Robertson’s trade request and intentions not to re-sign, Treliving is hesitant to let him go. He believes Robertson could play a significant role for Toronto this season, emphasizing the team’s commitment to his development.
Robertson was selected 53rd overall in the 2019 NHL draft and is the younger sibling of Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson.
The Canadiens, focused on rebuilding after missing the playoffs, have prioritized re-signing their key players. They extended contracts to Juraj Slafkovsky, Kaiden Guhle, Arber Xhekaj, and Justin Barron during the offseason. Canadiens GM Kent Hughes opted for a cautious approach in free agency, preferring not to rush into deals that might not align with the team’s long-term plans.
The Canadiens will kick off their 2024-25 NHL season at home on October 9 against the Maple Leafs.
