Extra Police Powers in Cardiff for Bonfire Night to Prevent Anti-Social Behaviour
As Bonfire Night approaches, police in Cardiff have been granted special powers to manage potential anti-social behaviour and curb the misuse of fireworks. Officers in the areas of Butetown and Grangetown will have the authority to disperse groups and take action against illegal fireworks activity over a 48-hour period, from Monday, November 4 to Wednesday, November 6. This measure is being introduced to safeguard the community and prevent any disturbances following a rise in recent incidents.
The move comes after reports of fireworks being thrown at members of the public, raising concerns for community safety. The dispersal order, authorized under Section 35 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014, empowers officers to break up gatherings and, if necessary, make arrests to maintain order. The order is part of a broader strategy to ensure public safety and address the risks posed by such behaviour.
Inspector Samantha Johnson from Cardiff Bay’s Neighbourhood Team highlighted that this is a preventative action, with an increased police presence in Butetown throughout the 48-hour period. Officers will be closely monitoring the situation, ready to step in if issues arise. She also urged parents to speak with their children about the dangers of getting involved in anti-social activities and to make sure they know where their children are, who they’re with, and what they’re doing.
South Wales Police stressed their firm stance against anti-social behaviour, with the dispersal order being one example of their ongoing efforts to maintain peace during the lead-up to Bonfire Night. The police are determined to prevent any further disturbances and ensure that the celebrations remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
This additional security measure in Cardiff follows a similar order in Abercynon, where concerns about the safety of a local bonfire prompted similar actions. As Bonfire Night draws near, authorities are committed to keeping the public safe, with increased patrols and heightened vigilance to address the risks posed by fireworks and potential anti-social behaviour. With this enhanced approach, Cardiff residents can feel confident that their safety is a top priority.
