Unfortunate News: Canucks Lose Another Player as Key Man Takes Leave…

Vancouver Canucks Defenceman Derek Forbort Takes Leave of Absence, Erik Brännström Called Up

Just hours before the Vancouver Canucks face the reigning Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on the second game of their three-game road trip, the team announced that defenceman Derek Forbort has taken a leave of absence for personal reasons. The news came as the Canucks made a roster move to fill the void left by Forbort’s departure.

In an official statement, General Manager Patrik Allvin confirmed that 25-year-old defenceman Erik Brännström has been recalled from the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League (AHL) to take Forbort’s spot on the roster. Brännström, who was traded to Vancouver from the Colorado Avalanche before the start of the 2024-25 season, has made an impression early on. Over two games with Abbotsford, the Swedish defenceman recorded three assists, two penalty minutes, and a plus-three rating, showing he’s ready to make an impact at the NHL level.

Brännström’s arrival fills the gap left by Forbort, who joined the Canucks on a one-year, $1.5 million deal this past July. In three games this season, Forbort has contributed one assist, logged two penalty minutes, and holds a minus-one rating. The organization and fans alike are hoping for Forbort’s swift return but are giving him the time he needs during this personal leave.

As the Canucks continue their road trip, all thoughts are with Forbort, and fans eagerly await Brännström’s first appearance in the lineup.
