Following a crushing 6-2 defeat by Chelsea, Wolverhampton Wanderers have shifted their focus to Serie A in the search for a replacement for Pedro Neto.
Initially, it seemed that Wolves might achieve a third consecutive victory over Chelsea. However, Noni Madueke’s hat-trick, along with a goal from Joao Felix—set up by a Pedro Neto assist—turned the tide, leaving Wolves with some urgent issues to address. Among these is the need to replace Neto, alongside shoring up their defense.
Wolves have been linked to potential signings like Carlos Forbs and Jota, a former Celtic star currently playing for Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. Jota would be an impressive acquisition, given his rise to fame under Ange Postecoglou at Celtic. However, with Sporting Club reportedly eyeing Jota’s return, Wolves may now be turning their attention to Italy to fill the void left by Neto.
According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, Wolves are now leading the race to sign Jonathan Ikone after initiating contact with his representatives. Ikone’s absence from Fiorentina’s squad during their match against Venezia has fueled speculation about an imminent transfer.
With competition from Leicester City, Wolves need to act swiftly to secure the 26-year-old’s services before the transfer window closes. Although Ikone’s reported weekly wage of £36,000 would not strain Wolves’ budget, the transfer fee Fiorentina demands remains uncertain.
Ikone, once a rising star at Lille, has struggled to make an impact since moving to Fiorentina in 2022. His declining performance in Italy might prompt him to seek a fresh start in the Premier League, much like Matheus Cunha, who revitalized his career at Wolves after a challenging stint at Atletico Madrid. Ikone’s potential signing could be a shrewd move for Wolves, offering him a chance to rediscover his best form and fill the void left by Neto in the process.
