Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams vomited after making a touchdown catch during Wednesday’s practice.
Head coach Dan Campbell indicated that as long as the 23-year-old continues to perform well on the field, he doesn’t mind if similar incidents occur in the future.
Since taking over as head coach of the Detroit Lions ahead of the 2021 season, Dan Campbell has garnered a reputation for his eccentricity, making his recent comments unsurprising.
Campbell, a former tight end, previously mentioned on the “Pardon My Take” podcast last year that he had hoped the team could have a pet lion, a proposal that was met with approval from team owner Sheila Ford Hamp but skepticism from NFL officials.
In high-pressure situations like professional sports, where the physical demands can be intense, it’s not uncommon for athletes to experience physical reactions such as vomiting. For Jameson Williams, his incident occurred during practice and not in a game, contrasting with instances like Purdue safety Chris Jefferson’s reaction after a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown in 2022, or Kansas City Royals pitcher Amir Garrett’s on-field incident in 2023.
Despite this, Williams, the Lions’ 2022 first-round pick from Alabama, has been highly praised by Campbell throughout the offseason. Campbell notably stated in May that Williams had shown the most improvement during spring activities.
In the 2023 regular season, Williams recorded 24 receptions for 354 yards and two touchdowns on 42 targets across 12 games. His strong performance continued into the playoffs, where he added six catches for 79 yards and another touchdown in three games, helping the Lions reach the NFC Championship Game unexpectedly.
